Why Your Child’s Play Space Needs Diversity

As a former kindergarten teacher with multiple years of experience working with varied student populations, and most recently English Language Learners; I know firsthand the importance of celebrating diversity in childhood education. But it’s not just about the classroom – it’s also about the toys and playthings we provide for our children.

Providing your child with diverse toys and books is an essential part of their growth and development. By offering playthings that represent diverse cultures and backgrounds, you’re helping your child develop empathy, respect, and an appreciation for differences. This is particularly important in a world that is increasingly global and interconnected.

At our company, we believe that all kids deserve to see themselves reflected in the toys they play with. We were founded by an early childhood educator who has two young children of her own, and we’re committed to promoting inclusivity and diversity in childhood education.

We know that we aren’t perfect and that we are continuously learning how to be better and more inclusive. That’s why we’re always seeking out new perspectives and ideas to ensure that we’re offering the most diverse and inclusive selection of toys possible.

One resource that has been particularly valuable to us is Rudine Sims Bishop’s influential essay “Windows, Mirrors, and Sliding Glass Doors.” In this essay, Bishop argues that children’s books should serve as “windows” into different cultures, “mirrors” that reflect their own experiences, and “sliding glass doors” that invite them to step into other worlds. We believe that this same concept applies to toys – by offering a range of playthings that represent different cultures and backgrounds, we can help children become more open-minded, empathetic, and accepting individuals.

In short, creating a diverse play space for your child is essential for their growth and development. Let’s all do our part to promote a more inclusive world for the next generation.
